Swift, Kelce engagement creates buzz at U.S. Open

Iga Swiatek had extra cause to smile after her U.S. Open win, discovering pop icon Taylor Swift had just announced her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce.
The music superstar shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday, drawing global attention and over 18 million likes after years of highly publicised heartbreak and chart-topping songs about love and loss.
Swiatek, a self-declared Swift fan, spotted the post after her match and walked into her news conference texting friends to share the update.
“She posted when I finished,” Swiatek said. “Maybe that’s not a coincidence.”
Swift and Kelce previously stole the spotlight at the 2024 men’s final, where they appeared at the courtside as Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets.
Their presence continues to resonate, as retired player Mary Carillo paused commentary during Sinner’s opener to announce, “Taylor Swift is engaged!”
Her co-commentator Jim Courier quipped, “With, like, a new record?” prompting laughter among fans and viewers.
Word of the engagement quickly reached the ESPN plaza, where reporters pressed Swiatek for her thoughts following her win over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango.
The Polish player spent much of her post-match news conference answering questions about Swift’s big reveal.
“Well, I’m just happy for her, because she deserves the best,” Swiatek said. “Obviously, she had a lot of boyfriends, so we know all about that. Hopefully, this one sticks. Travis seems like a great guy.”
