Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties 4-3, after a goalless draw, in Vancouver to reach their first World Cup quarter-final in 72 years.

During normal time, both sides failed to convert on several key chances, sending the game to penalties.

The match went into penalties, with Colombia’s Davinson Sanchez missing the first spot kick and hitting the crossbar.

Swiss centre back Manuel Akanji missed his penalty.

Colombia missed another opportunity from the spot as Juan Hernandez was denied by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, increasing Switzerland’s lead.

Ruben Vargas sealed the victory for Switzerland, converting brilliantly from the penalty spot and sending the Nati to their first quarter-final since 1954 when they hosted the competition.

Switzerland has been in remarkable form, remaining unbeaten with two draws and three wins in the tournament.

The Swiss progress to the quarter finals of the 2026 World Cup, facing reigning champions Argentina in Kansas City on July 11.
