Russia has blocked an “unprecedented wartime deal” that allows grain to flow from Ukraine to countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
The negotiation of an extension of the grain deal is to avoid worsening a global grain shortage.
“Lower the temperature — now,” said Mr Guterres. “Don’t flood the world today; don’t drown it tomorrow.”
“The people of Ukraine and beyond need peace, and they need peace now. Peace in line with the UN Charter. Peace in line with international law,” said Mr Guterres.
In addition to shipping millions of tonnes of food from Ukraine, the initiative also envisages the export of fertiliser needed by the world’s farmers.
