The contractor said preliminary work had been ongoing, and at the minister’s instruction, his team would assess the site on Monday.
“There is no leader who will not want his reign to be very peaceful, but if you bring crisis, the leader is not going to run away,” he said.
The minister said that the reconstruction would take 36 months.
The move followed a recent joint inspection, which revealed significant damage to eight piles.
The government decided to build a new bridge after technical assessments and stakeholder consultations.
Mr Umahi, while inspecting the bridge’s underdeck on Wednesday, told journalists that the decision was made in agreement with stakeholders.
President Bola Tinubu’s government states that it will cost N3.8 trillion to repair the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, while constructing a new one will cost N3.6 trillion.
