The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised concern over the rising incidences of infectious diseases across the country
AMR causes 700,000 deaths globally each year, a number that could rise to 10 million by 2050.
NCDC’s director general, Jide Idris, said the diseases pose significant health risks and underscore the need for coordinated national and regional responses.
Mr Idris stated, “We want a situation whereby febrile illnesses are detected early, managed effectively.’’
According to the NCDC DG, as of July 15, Nigeria has recorded 3,623 suspected cholera cases and 103 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 2.8 per cent.
Mr Idris said the integrated laboratory would be a game-changer in the fight against infectious diseases.
The commissioner alleged that the NCDC relied on old data to include the state among the affected states.
The NCDC boss said the top 10 affected states are Lagos, Bayelsa, Abia, Zamfara, Bauchi, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Rivers, and Delta, seven of which are in the south.
Nigeria is grappling with a cholera outbreak amidst a global shortage of vaccines.
The NCDC boss noted that every individual, irrespective of age, is susceptible to Lassa fever, stressing the need for caution to avoid the devastating effects.
