Mr Opeifa said the arrest marks a major breakthrough in the corporation’s campaign against vandalism.
The NRC chief appealed to residents of communities hosting railway facilities to support the corporation.
Mr Opeifa confirmed that the main line had been repaired to a safe level for operations, though work continues on the secondary track.
Mr Opeifa thanked God for preserving lives during the incident.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says normal train operations on the Port Harcourt-Aba corridor will resume on Tuesday.
Mr Opeifa noted that the regular train services would resume on September 9.
Mr Opeifa noted that the regular update would be achieved through dedicated phone lines: Queen 0703 645 2228, Lilian 0703 199 3211, and Abubakar – 0803 659 3212.
The NRC boss added that the remaining passengers were conveyed safely back to Idu and Kubwa stations aboard a rescue train dispatched from Idu for that purpose.
The NRC stated that adequate security was on ground at the incident scene.
Mr Opeifa said eight suspects were apprehended on July 11 for vandalising railway track components along the Sheme-Gusau rail corridor in Katsina State.
