Nigeria is set to receive its first consignment of the highly anticipated malaria vaccines on Thursday.
Among every 100 pregnant women, 20 suffer malaria and risk losing their babies and even their own lives.
In 2024, the R21/Matrix-M vaccine was recommended for use by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Malaria is responsible for 70 per cent of deaths among children in Cameroon, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
“We hope this is just the beginning. Continued innovation is needed to develop…next-generation vaccines to increase available supply and enable a healthier vaccine market.”
The pilot programme of $155.7 million will include Ghana, Malawi and Kenya; while other African countries will key in from January 2023.
Ms Moeti said the WHO released the landmark recommendations on using the first vaccine against malaria in 2021.
The virologist said the vaccine is effective against one of four species of Plasmodium responsible for malaria.
The WHO announced the approval in a statement on Wednesday.
