The police command in Borno State has re-arrested Kyari Kur, a convict who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri
He learnt bag and shoemaking skills while serving a term at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Billiri, Gombe.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said this was to decongest prisons, improve facilities and enhance staff and inmates’ welfare nationwide.
He noted that governors in the state had failed to either sign death warrants.
“What we have reoccurring since the #EndSars protests of October 2020, have been a mass of people attacking our facilities from outside and setting the inmates free.”
“You have leaders respond as if it’s a casual thing; as if it’s not their responsibility…I feel pained to be called a senator, and I’m almost like helpless.”
“The visit is part of the command’s effort to ensure adequate protection of all corrections facilities and other vulnerable infrastructure in the state and to prevent any attack.”
The federal prison was breached on Tuesday.
“Seven inmates who escaped were rearrested by the police and are in custody. One of them voluntarily surrendered himself to the police.”
