World Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated every year on May 28.
Ms Okunna said many women did not have access to sanitary pads due to poverty.
The UNICEF consultant said only eight per cent of schools in Nigeria have girls’ toilets compartment with provisions for MHM.
“About 44 per cent of women and girls in Nigeria are experiencing period poverty as they cannot afford N500 sanitary pads.”
Many women are wary of the health implications of reusing menstrual pads. But like other sanitary products, any health concerns raised are usually as a result of poor hygiene.
