A witness who spoke to the newspaper said the PDP chieftain was shot several times by the assailants who had laid in wait for him.
Mr Eleghu, who is also the candidate of the party for the Onuimo State Constituency, was killed Thursday night in his house.
Michael Abattam, the police spokesman in Imo, on Friday, said the suspects were apprehended after receiving an intelligence report on their nefarious acts.
The police stated that a recovered identity card belonged to one of the killed bandits, “Chukwuemezie Chukwu,” a native of Atta in the Ikeduru local government area.
A source in the community, who requested anonymity, said two persons were feared killed in the attack.
“We were portraying the extent to which many persons, especially youths, have gone in a bid to acquire wealth.”
The said a “vigorous and aggressive manhunt” was underway to apprehended the criminals.
