The National Cancer Intervention Fund has called for sustainable and transparent financing mechanisms to reduce preventable cancer deaths in Nigeria.
“Cancer is not always a death sentence; early detection saves lives,” an oncologist at UCH said.
It noted that lung, stomach and cervical cancers made up nearly half of all preventable cancers.
Ms Osiegbu explained that the campaign was inspired by similar initiatives worldwide.
ARCON’s national president, Nwamaka Lasebikan, made the call in a statement on Tuesday to commemorate World Cancer Day 2025.
“We will also establish a childhood cancer care fund of N500 million”, he added.
WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative provides a roadmap to attain the targets to save 2.5 million lives from breast cancer by 2040.
About 10 million people die each year from cancer and this had been projected to rise to 13 million by 2030.
