Tanzania’s Zanzibar authorities have pledged to support spice farmers, saying spice farming is one of the attractions for tourists.

Abdalla Mohammed Juma, the director of the Department of Tourism in Zanzibar’s Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, urged spice farmers on Pemba Island to improve their farms to increase yields while attracting more tourists to generate income.

Mr Juma said the department had been implementing the 2017 tourism policy, which requires people to take advantage of all opportunities to boost the tourism industry.

“Spice farming is liked by many tourists that are interested in seeing the spices,” Mr Juma said while addressing spice farmers in Mtambwe village in Wete District of North Pemba Region.

He added that the farms should, among other things, be well planted and have services such as toilets and rest areas.

Pemba Island is renowned for producing spices, including cloves, lemongrass, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, and vanilla.
