Two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators, on Wednesday, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during Senate plenary in Abuja.

The senators are Manu Haruna, representing Taraba Central, and Isa Shuaibu Lau, representing Taraba North.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced their defections separately during the plenary.

In letters read by Mr Akpabio, the senators said their representation would be better advanced on the APC platform.

“I formally notify the Senate of my decision to withdraw from the PDP and align with the APC,” one letter stated.

The senators said the decision followed “deep reflection, consultations with constituents, and assessment of political realities and developmental aspirations”.

They urged the Senate to reflect their defections in its records in line with parliamentary procedures and legislative rules.

Welcoming them, Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, said the APC had transformed Nigeria’s political and developmental landscape.

Mr Monguno described the party’s achievements as “unparalleled and unprecedented”, adding that defectors would be treated as foundation members of the caucus.

Reacting, Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP-Benue South), expressed sadness, saying, “My colleagues have moved with our mandate without proper consultation.”

Mr Moro added, “I wish them well and hope the APC fulfils their wishes,” while affirming his position as Senate minority leader.

Mr Akpabio, however, urged the APC to manage its growing size carefully to avoid internal crises arising from increased membership.
