Tension as gunmen kill five farmers in Ile-Ife; Ooni urges calm

The killing of five Modakeke people on their way to farm by unknown gunmen Friday morning is generating huge tension around the ancient town of Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Already, Ooni of Ife, Adeyemi Ogunwusi, the paramount ruler in the area, is appealing for peace as aggrieved persons are said to be threatening reprisals, forcing businesses in the area to close abruptly.

Police spokesperson in Osun, Yemisi Opalola, said the law enforcement agency was on top of the situation and that the Osun police commissioner Olawale Olokode has drafted tactical police units to the area to maintain the peace.

The corpses of the murdered victims were discovered near Toro road in Modakeke around 6:00am., on Friday per Vanguard report.

The news outlet said the police have evacuated their bodies and deposited it at the hospital.

Ms Opalola says normalcy has been restored to the community.
