“This is threat to democracy,” says Gov. Adeleke as EFCC freezes Osun govt account
Barely 10 days to the Osun State governorship election, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen the sovernment bank account.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a letter dated August 5, requested First Bank Plc to place a “Post-No-Debit” on the Osun State Government Statutory Allocation account.
The letter titled “Investigation Activities,” read: “Refer to our letter CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/HQ/PFS/TA/OSUN/VOL.17/165 dated 15th April, 2026 on the above subject.”
It added, “In furtherance to the above, you are kindly requested to place a Post-No-Debit on the account.”
The letter also specified the “Osun State Government Statutory Allocation Acct: 2017170947” as the account that should be frozen.
In a statement on X on Wednesday, Governor Ademola Adeleke confirmed the freezing of the state’s account by the anti-graft agency.
“We received a letter from our banker, forwarding a letter from the EFCC, instructing the bank to freeze the Osun State Government account. This action was taken without any court order,” Mr Adeleke said.
Questioning the legality of the EFCC’s action, the Governor said, “We are supposed to be in a democracy, where the rule of law must always prevail. We will therefore not accept a situation where federal agencies trample on the constitutional rights of subnational governments. This is a threat to our democracy. If we all keep quiet and allow this illegality, very soon, whatever is left of our democracy will be fully eroded.”
Mr Adeleke also lamented “constant police raids and arrests of Accord leaders for no reason and without any warrants of arrest. Several Accord members have been killed and 60 Accord members have been arrested, taken to Abuja, and detained without any charges.”
He added, “All these intimidation and attacks were carried out on the order of Gboyega Oyetola over an election his candidate cannot win.”
Recall that the People Gazette earlier reported that the governor raised the alarm over plot by the EFCC to close the state accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship poll.
