President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Olugbemisola Odusote as the first female director-general (DG) of the Nigerian Law School (NLS).

A statement on Tuesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the appointment takes effect from January 10 and will be for a four-year tenure.

Ms Odusote currently serves as the deputy DG and head of the NLS Lagos campus and will now become the first woman to lead the institution since its establishment in 1962.

She is to succeed Isa Chiroma, whose tenure expires on January 9, after eight years in office.

Ms Odusote obtained her LL.B. degree from the Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988.

She holds an LL.M. from the same university, specialising in corporate and commercial law.

Ms Odusote later obtained a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. Her research interests include public law and the administration of Justice.

She joined the NLS in 2001 as a lecturer and has since served in various capacities, including Head of Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus.

She was also a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom.

Ms Odusote has published extensively in reputable local and international law journals.

She has presented papers at numerous legal education conferences and served on committees of the Council of Legal Education (CLE) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

As DG, Ms Odusote will provide academic leadership and oversee administrative and strategic management across all campuses.

She will also serve as principal liaison with the CLE, Body of Benchers, and the NBA.
