Tinubu declines assent to RMRDC, CIPSM bills over legal concerns

President Bola Tinubu has declined assent to two bills, citing legal concerns.
This is contained in two separate letters Mr Tinubu wrote, which were read during plenary on Thursday.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who read the letters, informed the lawmakers of the president’s decision to withhold assent to the proposed legislation.
The affected bills are the Raw Materials Research and Development Council Amendment Bill, 2026, and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management Establishment Bill, 2026.
The president said that, subject to resolving the grey areas, the bill might be suitable for retransmission and assent after necessary legislative amendments.
Mr Tinubu, who said the reasons for withholding assent were clearly outlined clause by clause in the letters, urged the lawmakers to address the identified concerns before resubmitting both bills for his assent.
The Senate president thereafter referred both bills to the Senate committee on rules and business for review, mandating that it submit recommendations within four weeks.
