U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to declassify files relating to the deaths of former President John F. Kennedy, his brother and former Senator Robert Kennedy, and civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.

During his campaign, Mr Trump had promised to order the release of classified information on the three iconic figures, all of whom died from assassinations with details about their deaths deeply rooted in speculations and conspiracy theories.

A significant section of the American public believes that their assassinations were sanctioned by U.S. intelligence agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The executive action is “ordering the declassification of files relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.,” Mr Trump said. “That’s a big one, huh? A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long — for years, for decades.”

Thousands of files are expected to be released on the assassinations of the three famous figures, including some 3,000 documents that had never been made public and 30,000 that had previously been released with redactions regarding Mr Kennedy’s case.
