Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for the suspension of the country’s constitution in new claims of fraud over the November 2020 presidential election. 

Mr Trump, on Sunday, stated this on his self-owned Truth Social Media Platform, asking for all rules and regulations, including those found in the constitution, which aided Joe Biden’s triumph in the election to be abolished. 

“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” stated Mr Trump. “Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!” 

The ex-U.S. president recently announced his decision to contest the Republican party’s nomination ahead of the November 2024 election. 

Mr Trump’s comments came after Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, said he would reveal how Twitter worked with the Democrats to suppress the Hunter Biden story and has since attracted backlash across party lines.

Members of his Republican party said the party’s leadership would consider Mr Trump’s statement when deciding the next presidential flag bearer of the party. 

Republican Mike Turner of Ohio, on the House Intelligence Committee, said he “vehemently” disagreed and “absolutely” condemned Mr Trump’s statement. 

“There is a political process that has to go forward before anybody is a frontrunner or anybody is even the candidate for the party. I believe that people certainly are going to take into consideration a statement like this as they evaluate a candidate,” Mr Turner said. 

Newly elected Republican representative Mike Lawler (New York) also disagreed with Mr Trump’s remarks asking the former president to “focus on the future.”

“The constitution is set for a reason, to protect the rights of every American. I think the former president would be well-advised to focus on the future if he is going to run for president again,” Mr Lawler said. 

White House Deputy Press Secretary, Andrew Bates, reacting to Mr Trump in a statement, said, “You cannot only love America when you win.”

Mr Bates added, “The American Constitution is a sacrosanct document that for over 200 years has guaranteed that freedom and the rule of law prevail in our great country. Attacking the constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation.”
