Trump endorses Mike Johnson for another term as House Speaker
The United States President-elect Donald Trump has endorsed Mike Johnson for another term as House Speaker following days of discussion with House Republicans poised to choose a new leader on Friday.
“The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hardworking, religious man,” Mr Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday.
Mr Trump had this month hurt Mr Johnson’s reelection chances after the president-elect, alongside his ally Elon Musk, sank an agreed bipartisan bill to avert a government shutdown.
A significant 38 Republican lawmakers voted against a failed alternative bill put together by Mr Johnson that was endorsed by both Mr Trump and Mr Musk, which spoke to the unpopularity of Mr Johnson’s move.
Many have predicted the move may hurt Mr Johnson’s plan to return as House Speaker, with many Republican lawmakers reported to be considering going up against his reelection.
Mr Trump has now decided to endorse Mr Johnson for the Friday election, three days before Mr Trump’s Electoral College victory is certified by a joint session of Congress.
The House Republicans will hope to avoid any leadership tussle, which may delay Mr Trump’s Electoral College victory certification.
Mr Trump added that Mr Johnson would “do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!”
