President Donald Trump’s government has threatened to revoke the visas of Nigerian students who skip classes or quit school without informing the appropriate authorities.

U.S. Mission in Nigeria, in a statement on Monday, also warned that they could be barred from future U.S. visa applications.

“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your programme of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas,” the U.S. government said.

It added, “Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues.”

This warning comes amid the Trump-led administration’s clampdown on immigration in the U.S.

Last month, the U.S. government announced visa restrictions, reducing the five-year visa policy for Nigerians seeking non-immigrant and non-official trips to America to three months. It also mandated that visa applicants in Nigeria make their social media accounts public for security vetting to determine whether they are admissible for an American visa.

In June, Mr Trump signed a travel ban, blocking Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen from entering America.

Reports also indicate that Nigeria is among 36 countries under consideration for the U.S. travel ban.
