United States of America President-elect Donald Trump has nominated congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer of Oregon as secretary of labour 

Mr Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, praising Ms Chavez-DeRemer’s efforts to bridge the gap between business and labour and her commitment to improving conditions for American workers.  

In his statement, Mr Trump highlighted her bipartisan approach, saying, “Lori has worked tirelessly with both business and labour to build America’s workforce and support the hardworking men and women of America.” 

He described her as the ideal candidate to lead initiatives aimed at increasing wages, expanding training opportunities, and revitalising the country’s manufacturing sector.  

Mr Trump also emphasised Ms Chavez-DeRemer’s potential to foster “historic cooperation between business and labour” as part of his broader vision to restore the American Dream for working families.  

Ms Chavez-DeRemer, a prominent Republican from Oregon, made a name for herself as a pragmatic and results-oriented lawmaker. 

Born and raised in California, she later moved to Oregon, where she built a successful career in public service and entrepreneurship.  

Before joining congress, Ms Chavez-DeRemer served as the mayor of Happy Valley, Oregon, becoming the first Latina mayor in the state’s history. 

Since her election to congress, Ms Chavez-DeRemer has prioritised workforce development, small business growth, and policies aimed at strengthening the middle class. 

Her background as a small business owner and her advocacy for trade schools and apprenticeships made her a vocal proponent of expanding opportunities for American workers.  

If confirmed, Ms Chavez-DeRemer would bring her experience as a local leader and legislator to one of the federal government’s most critical roles.
