Two men arraigned in Ekiti for possession of Indian hemp
On Friday, two men, Fanimo Gbenga, 44, and Adebayo Wasiu, 42, were arraigned in a chief magistrates’ court in Ado-Ekiti over alleged possession of Indian hemp.
The defendants, of unknown addresses, are facing a charge of possession of Indian hemp.
The prosecutor, Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on August 6 at about 2:00 p.m. in Ado-Ekiti.
Mr Adeniyi alleged that the police found weeds suspected to be Indian hemp in the defendants’ possession.
He said the offence contravened Section 5 (b) of the Indian Hemp Act, LFN 2004.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.
Counsel to the first defendant, Opeyemi Esan, and the second defendant, Michael Olaleye, urged the court to grant the defendants bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.
The chief magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted the defendants 50,000 bail with one surety each in like sum.
She adjourned the case until September 12 for a hearing.
