Two men arraigned over alleged possession of hemp

The police on Thursday, dragged two men before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of hemp.
The defendants, Ayodele Lekan, 39; and Olaosebikan Ropo, 35, whose addresses were not stated, are standing trial on charges bordering on possession of hemp.
They each, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector Ayodeji Aina, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on December 29, at about 1 p.m. in Iyin-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendants had in their possession weeds suspected to be hemp, adding that they were consequently arrested following investigations.
The offence contravenes the provisions of section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act LFN 2004.
The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.
Defence counsel, Timi Omotosho, urged the court to grant the defendants bail on liberal terms, adding that they would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N50,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.
She adjourned the case untill February 1 for hearing.
