Two men in court over alleged illegal possession of hemp

The prosecutor said that the police detectives allegedly caught the defendants with the weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

Two men, Lawrence Dada and Monsuru Olalekan, on Thursday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, over alleged illegal possession of Indian hemp.

Dada, 21 and Olalekan 37, are facing a charge of illegal possession of Indian hemp, to which they pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on February 23 at about 3.30 p.m. in Aramoko-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Mr Oriyomi said that the police detectives allegedly caught the defendants with the weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

He said the offence contravened Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act LFN, 2004.

Mr Oriyomi urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the court to grant his clients bail, promising that they would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until April, 7 for mention.
