The UBA Foundation has launched its 2026 Tree Planting for Sustainability Initiative in two Lagos-based secondary schools, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, launched the initiative in commemoration of the World Environment Day 2026, themed “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” 

The WED is observed globally on June 5.

The initiative, now in its fourth year, was launched at King’s College, Lagos, and CMS Grammar School in the Bariga area, according to a statement on Sunday.

The managing director and CEO of the foundation, Bola Atta, said the initiative aimed to raise awareness and encourage climate-positive action among young people.

“We want young people to understand that the environment needs our collective support and protection,” Ms Atta said during the exercise at CMS Grammar School.

She added, “Through initiatives like this, we are encouraging the next generation to embrace sustainable practices that will help create healthier communities and a better future for all.”

According to Ms Atta, the initiative will promote environmental sustainability in schools and communities and make young people environmental advocates.

She stated that the choice of King’s College and CMS Grammar School was deliberate, as the foundation considered them based on their ability to sustain the initiative.

“These are iconic institutions with deep historical significance,” Ms Atta said. “CMS Grammar School is Nigeria’s oldest secondary school, while King’s College has been shaping leaders for more than a century. We wanted schools where these trees would be nurtured and allowed to flourish for generations to come.”

Ms Atta decried environmental exploitation driven by rapid urbanisation and called for collective action to address environmental degradation and climate change.

“Over the years, development has often taken precedence over environmental preservation, leading to the loss of many trees and green areas. However, there is no better time than now to begin restoring our environment and making a lasting impact,” she added.

UBA’s Group Chief Risk Officer, Awele Ajibola, highlighted the risks associated with climate change and reiterated the financial institution’s commitment to sustainable development.

The principal of CMS Grammar School, Jacob Ogunyinka, and his colleague at King’s College, Magaji Zachariah, lauded the initiative and thanked the foundation for investing in environmental education.

Students participated in discussions on environmental stewardship, including proper waste disposal, water conservation, recycling, and energy efficiency.

Activities to mark WED included UBA’s inauguration as a member of the Finance Taskforce for Plastic Action in Nigeria, the creation of sustainability clubs in schools, and green talk sessions, among others.
