Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana has filed a complaint to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, demanding immediate release of Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi from house arrest.

Making this disclosure in a tweet on Wednesday, Mr. Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, said that the complaint filed by Mr. Falana is challenging his continued illegal confinement by the Ugandan police and the military.

Mr. Falana in the petition accused the Yoweri Museveni-led government of depriving the opposition leader and his wife Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi their freedom by keeping them under house arrest.

Demanding that Bobi Wine, his wife, and other individuals in detention be immediately released, Mr. Falana asked the working group to commence an investigation  into the case as regards the rights violation of the Ugandan political activist.

He also demanded that the working group issue an allegation letter to the government of Uganda to inquire about the case generally.

The human rights lawyer asked the UN working group to raise questions regarding the reason for Bobi Wine’s arrest, detention, and the humiliating treatment he received from the Ugandan government.

Apart from demanding an investigation into the continued house arrest of Bobi Wine, Mr. Falana  asked the UN group to issue “an opinion declaring that the deprivation of liberty and detention of Mr. Kyagulanyi, together with his wife and domestic staff is arbitrary and in violation of Uganda’s Constitution and obligations under international human rights law.”

Mr. Kyagulanyi has been kept under house arrest in his home since returning from voting at the country’s general election last week Thursday.

The former reggae singer turned politician who was announced as the runner up at the election revealed that the military took over home a few hours after he alleged that the Thursday’s election was rigged.
