The pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council at the University of Ibadan, Adebisi Akande, has approved and announced the appointment of Peter Olapegba as the institution’s 14th substantive vice-chancellor.

A statement on Wednesday by Mr Akande said the appointment followed “a thorough, transparent, and highly competitive exercise” and assessment conducted by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board of the institution.

“Today, Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the five (5) candidates shortlisted,” Mr Akande said. “At the end of a very thorough, transparent, and highly competitive exercise, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position of vice-chancellor.”

The pro-chancellor said the appointment was in line with the University Act and extant rules, adding that the process began with eight applicants and five candidates shortlisted in order of merit for the final interview.

“The governing council, at its just-concluded meeting today, considered the report of the selection board and approved the recommendation of the board to appoint Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

“It is, therefore, my pleasure to present to you the 14th vice-chancellor of this great university, the University of Ibadan, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba. We wish him success in his tenure,” he said.

Mr Olapegba is expected to resume the position on November 1, when the tenure of the outgoing vice-chancellor, Kayode Adebowale, will officially end.

Before his latest appointment, Mr Olapegba served as UI’s deputy vice-chancellor (administration).

He is a professor in the institution’s Department of Psychology, with expertise in social and behavioural psychology.
