The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended its heat-health warning across England, as rising temperatures continue to increase health risks, especially for vulnerable people.

The update came into effect on Monday, 22 June, at 11 a.m., placing several regions under amber heat health alerts. These include parts of London, the East Midlands, the West Midlands, the South East, the South West, the East of England, the North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

A yellow alert remains in place for the North East. The alerts will continue until 11 p.m. on Friday, 26 June.

The amber heat-health alert signals that the hot weather could cause wider health impacts for the general population, while the yellow heat-health alert indicates that there may be some health risks, mainly for vulnerable groups, but impacts are usually less severe.

The UKHSA warned that periods of warm weather could lead to serious health issues, especially for older adults and people living with existing health conditions.

The agency’s Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection, Dr Agostinho Sousa, said, “Sustained periods of warm weather can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

“We are urging health and social care services in affected regions to ensure they are prepared, and reminding people to look out for elderly relatives, neighbours, and those with underlying health conditions, making sure they are aware of the forecast and following the necessary advice.”

The agency urged people to take simple measures to stay safe during the hot weather, including staying hydrated, keeping homes cool, and avoiding direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

It also encouraged people who engage in outdoor activities to do so during cooler times of the day.
