Ukraine has reportedly fired United Kingdom-made Storm Shadow missiles into Russia, a day after it targeted a weapon deposit in Bryansk with a U.S.-provided Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS).
Both the UK and Ukraine have yet to confirm the use of the Storm Shadow missiles in Russia. However, their deployment has been widely reported in British media.
Previously, the UK had said British tanks, anti-tank missiles, and other military equipment could be used inside Russia as part of Ukraine’s defence.
The attack comes just days after the United States president, Joe Biden, authorised the same policy shift.
Authorities said the missiles caused no casualties or damage.
On Tuesday, Russia’s defence ministry said Ukraine had fired six U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) in the Bryansk region.
A military analyst, Sean Bell, said he would be surprised if today marks the first time Ukraine has used such a missile to attack Russia.
“I would be quite surprised if they haven’t been used for select targets further in Russia because they are very effective at striking Russian logistics hubs, headquarters, and ammunition dumps,” Mr Bell said.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had been asking Kyiv’s allies to give it the capability to strike deeper behind Russian lines for over a year.
Mr Biden’s change of policy is linked to changing tactics by the Russians, which began deploying North Korean ground troops to supplement its forces.
