Unpaid Salaries: UNIJOS ASUU declares indefinite strike ahead of April 13 exam resumption

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau State chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over delayed payment of March 2026 salaries and the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
The decision was announced in a statement by the chapter’s chairman, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, on Wednesday, noting that the strike takes effect from April 8, 2026.
Mr Molwus said the action followed due process and directed members to withdraw from academic and statutory activities.
“Dear comrades, after following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings as our salary for March 2026 remains unpaid despite our patience,” he said.
“This action is in line with the extant NEC resolution and our standing congress resolution and takes immediate effect from today, April 8, 2026, until our salaries are paid.”
The ASUU chairman blamed the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for the delay, noting that the university’s bursary had fulfilled its obligations in the salary disbursement process.
“From our consultation, the delay is occasioned by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, as the bursary of the university has done its part in the process of salary payment,” he added.
Mr Molwus warned that prolonged delays could threaten industrial harmony, urging members to fully comply with the strike directive.
He also confirmed that a strike monitoring team had been activated to ensure compliance.
Recall that the Peoples Gazette had earlier reportedthat the institution’s authorities fixed April 13 for the resumption of the suspended examinations following security concerns after a deadly attack in Jos.
