The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has advised drivers to exercise caution due to the hazardous driving conditions caused by the foggy and hazy weather typical of the harmattan season.

Yusuf Suberu, FCT squadron leader at the Vehicle Inspection Office, made this call in an interview on Monday in Abuja.

Mr Suberu noted that the dry season is characterised by foggy and hazy weather, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of road accidents.

He emphasised that this season requires heightened road safety awareness, urging road users to remain disciplined and vigilant to prevent accidents.

He appealed to motorists to avoid excessive speeding, particularly driven by the desire to make multiple trips for financial gain.

“The ember months are notoriously busy on the roads, but it’s essential for both drivers and pedestrians to prioritise caution to ensure their safety and the security of their belongings.

“Motorists have a responsibility to maintain their vehicles in good working condition, including regular servicing, to prevent accidents.

“Motorists are advised to stay alert for potential hazards, such as road diversions and obstructions caused by ongoing road construction projects across the country,” he added.

Mr Suberu stressed that overloading and speeding are particularly hazardous during the dry season, increasing the likelihood of serious accidents.

He explained that overloading affects a vehicle’s performance and compromises the driver’s ability to respond safely in critical situations.

The VIO chief recommended that motorists proactively adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents during the dry season.

Mr Suberu appealed to road users to prioritise their own safety and that of others by being extra cautious and following all safety guidelines while driving.

“Speeding is a highly hazardous behaviour that contributes to a significant number of road fatalities, resulting in the loss of many lives. It is undeniable that the ember months bring increased traffic, leading to greater impatience among motorists and a higher likelihood of disregarding traffic laws.

“Motorists are reminded to exercise patience, keep their vehicles in good condition through regular maintenance, drive within speed limits, avoid overloading, and comply with all traffic rules.

“Together, we can make our roads safer by driving responsibly, being more tolerant, and looking out for one another. A crash-free society is achievable if we all do our part,” he added.
