Several local air travellers in Nigeria have called on the federal government to conduct an exhaustive investigation into the allegation of aviation minister Festus Keyamo that the aeronautic sector is riddled with corruption and unsafe practices.

Chimezie Nwagboso said, “I just feel that there should be a proper investigation on the matter. 

“I’m already affected because right now, I don’t even feel comfortable or safe travelling by plane. I won’t risk travelling a long distance by car, ship, or train; it’s not as comfortable as a plane.”

Another air traveller, Alex Okam, said, “I think the aviation minister’s statement is quite alarming and concerning. It’s unacceptable that corrupt officials would compromise safety standards, putting lives at risk.

“It’s essential to address this issue urgently and ensure that safety protocols are strictly enforced so as to ensure the safety of airplane passengers.”

Mr Okam added, “Honestly, the minister’s statement makes me a bit apprehensive about flying. I’d definitely be more cautious and do my research before choosing an airline or flight. However, I wouldn’t entirely avoid flying, as I believe that air travel is still relatively safe, and the aviation ministry and FG should take necessary actions to address these concerns.”

Mr Okam said he understood the minister’s concerns and that “it’s worth panicking. I believe in taking necessary precautions but also trusting in the authorities to ensure our safety.” 

“I wouldn’t seek alternative transportation, as flying is still the fastest and most efficient way to travel. I’d just pray and put my trust in God, as I always do when I travel,” he stressed.

For Precious Okoye, safety is a primary concern.

Ms Okoye said, “I’m expecting safety, credibility and a good trip from the airline and a lot more because I paid for a service and as such, I should get one. So the airline would be doing me a disservice if their airplane undergoes a technical difficulty and they are aware of it before risking multiple lives for reasons best known to them.”

However, Ms Okoye said the aviation minister’s alarming revelations would discourage her from flying.

“The statement won’t affect my travelling by plane. People travel by plane for various reasons, such as convenience, comfort, and getting to certain destinations on time. I travel for all the reasons I mentioned, and no means of transport is entirely safe,” she said.

Chiemerie Obiezewulu described Mr Keyamo’s statement as “sad.”

Mr Obiezewulu said, “People we put our lives into their hands are joking with them when there are certain rules and guidelines they are expected to follow. There has to be an immediate addressing of this matter to avoid putting the lives of innocent Nigerians at risk.”

He added, “The minister’s words to me are quite concerning. I’d personally avoid airlines or flights for the time being inasmuch that it is safe and fast. I would rather take a different route for this till it is officially handled.”

“I understand the minister’s concern, but his words are making me have second thoughts about airlines in Nigeria. I hope it all gets sorted out soon.” 

“I’ll fly if I have to if it’s a far distance and all, but if it’s somewhere that won’t take so long, I can use the road,” Wisdom Folorunsho told Peoples Gazette. 

Dapo Ajayi noted that flying in Nigeria would remain the most viable option.

“I would still fly. I only hope that the regulatory bodies carry out their duties and checks. The alternative is road which is not palatable,” said Mr Ajayi.

Another traveller, Elijah Soladoye, said, “So I think I trust the airlines I use well enough, one of them being Air Peace, which just got approved for international flights. I think they should be standard and trustworthy enough to achieve that.”

Victory Okechukwu would rather fly because travelling on Nigerian roads “is more stressful and time-consuming and still way more unsafe.” 

Mr Okechukwu said, “I’ll leave my life in God’s hands and use the plane.”
