Winter Olympics: China claims first gold medal in short track mixed relay

The team of Qu Chunyu, Fan Kexin, Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei edged out Italy by two-hundredths of a second.

China claimed their first gold medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics on Saturday in the inaugural short track speed-skating mixed relay.

The team of Qu Chunyu, Fan Kexin, Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei hung on to edge out Italy by two-hundredths of a second.

Hungary took the bronze medal.

Italian veteran Arianna Fontana became the first short track speed-skater to win nine Olympic medals, her silver giving her a 1-3-5 haul since 2006.

Pre-race favourites the Netherlands went out in the semi-final when their star Suzanne Schulting lost control and fell.
