World Cup star Cody Gakpo joins Liverpool in record deal

Liverpool have completed the signing of sensational youngster Cody Gakpo in a record permanent deal from Dutch outfit, PSV Eindhoven, the club announced Wednesday night.
“Liverpool Football Club have reached an agreement for the transfer of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, subject to a work permit,” the club statement said.
It added: “The 23-year-old forward will officially become a Reds player at the start of the January transfer window after agreeing personal terms and successfully completing a medical at the AXA Training Centre.”
The Reds will pay £37 million fixed fee plus add-ons that could rise to £44 million to PSV Eindhoven which is a record transfer sale for the Dutch outfit.
Cody turned not a few heads at the Qatar 2022 World Cup with his superlative performance. His three goals helped Netherlands to a quarterfinal showing at the mundial.
The 23-year-old was very close to joining Manchester United, with the Red Devils being the favourite to land the attacker. Liverpool, however, gazumped to snap up the player.
Cody flew to England Wednesday morning where he successfully passed his medicals and subsequently put pen to paper on a six-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2028.
After signing the contract, Cody Gakpo said: “I’m really excited to be at Liverpool, looking forward to starting playing for this amazing club.”
He added: “This is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can do and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments, it’s also good to develop here.”
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said: “Gakpo, great player but also a smart guy. We have managed to sign a player who we have known about for quite some time… and who we believe will have a really bright future with us”
“Trust me, he has huge potential”.
The Netherlands international will wear the number 18 shirt.
