World Women’s Forum opens in Mongolia’s capital
The World Women’s Forum kicked off in Mongolia on Thursday, focusing on women’s empowerment, gender equality, climate change, and the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Under the auspices of Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, the forum themed, “Towards a Green Future” was co-organised by Mongolia’s presidential office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the United Nations.
“In spite of more than half of the SDGs implementation period having passed, progress on Goal 5, gender equality, remains insufficient. Research by the International Monetary Fund shows that many countries still impose legal barriers to women’s economic participation, and women are underrepresented in decision-making roles.
“As of June, women lead 26 countries, hold 26.5 per cent of parliamentary seats, and occupy 22 per cent of ministerial positions. They are also over represented in informal and unpaid work and earn about 12 per cent less than men on average,” Khurelsukh stated at the opening ceremony.
He noted that it was estimated that achieving full gender equality could boost the global economy by 23 per cent.
He added, “Women’s roles and participation are crucial for the harmony, prosperity, and well-being of any nation. Their contributions, especially those of female leaders, are essential for maintaining global peace, achieving the SDGs, and building a just and compassionate society.’’
The organisers said that hundreds of Mongolian female leaders from fields such as business, sports, and arts, leaders and representatives from countries and international organisations attended the forum.
During the two-day event, attendees are expected to hear presentations and engage in discussions on topics including the role of women leaders in environmental initiatives, shaping sustainable food systems and the impact of women entrepreneurs in the e-economy.
Other topics are gender equality in the economy, the influence of education on empowering women and girls, and gender equality in sports, arts, and culture.
