Yobe to spend N700 million on LG election: Official

The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) has proposed N700 million for the conduct of local government councils’ election slated for Nov. 25.
The chairman of the commission, Dr Mamman Mohammed stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday in Damaturu.
He said that Gov. Mai Mala Buni had earlier approved the elections which would produce 17 local council chairmen and 178 councillors.
According to Mohammed, each of the candidates must possess a minimum secondary school certificate, and be a resident of the community he wished to contest election, among others.
He added that each contestant for chairmanship would pay a fee of N300,000, while those contesting for vice chairmanship and councillorship would pay a fee of N250,000 and N200,000, respectively.
The chairman said political parties would be issued electoral guidelines to enable them to present qualitative candidates for good governance at the grassroot.
Mr Mohammed reiterated the commitment of the commission to conduct credible, free, fair and peaceful election in the state.
He, therefore, urged journalists to provide effective coverage and charged security agencies to ensure safety of polling units in the election.
