2026 World Cup: Switzerland sweep off Bosnia Herzegovina 4-1 win

Switzerland blew Bosnia-Herzegovina away in the last 20 minutes of the match.

Switzerland have defeated Bosnia Herzegovina 4-1 in their second 2026 World Cup Group B match on Thursday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, U.S., to boost their chances of qualifying for the round of 16.

Both teams failed to make their chances count in the first half, but the goals started pouring in from the 74th minute of the second half, when Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi slotted home a sizzler from a headed clearance by a Bosnia-Herzegovina player.

A red card was shown to Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemović in the 80th minute for a foul on Switzerland’s Breel Embolo, and four minutes later, Rubén Vargas found the bottom corner from an Embolo assist to double the lead, before Vargas then provided an assist for Manzambi to score his brace in the 90th minute to make it three.

In the 93rd minute, Ermin Mahmić pulled one back for Bosnia, by firing home a stunner after Switzerland’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, punched away the ball from a corner-kick, but it was too late to stage a comeback back, as Amar Memić made a late challenge on substitute Switzerland’s Djibril Sow, for Granit Xhaka to score from the penalty spot in the 97th minute, to restore the three goal cushion.

With the 1-1 draw against Qatar in their first match on Saturday, Switzerland now have four points, the same as first-placed Canada, who have a superior goal difference.

After the game, Switzerland coach, Murat Yakin, said, “It was very important that after the second hydration break, we would change a few things, because then the opponent can’t react immediately. Maybe that was the edge we had. We brought in very fast players, and our opponent couldn’t run with them, which opened up gaps on the edge. That was my strategy. I waited until the break.”
