At least 368 persons were killed in a month between December 2023 and January 1, 2024, Amnesty International, has said in contrast to President Bola Tinubu’s claim that security has improved since his assumption of office.

On January 1, Mr Tinubu in his New Year message said, “Since our administration took over the mantle of office, security has improved. Silently, we have worked to free captives from abductors.”

However, Amnesty International in a series of tweets on Thursday, put a figure to the number of people killed in different attacks between December 2023 and January 1, 2024, debunking Mr Tinubu’s claim.

“In his new year message to the nation, President Bola Tinubu said ‘security has improved since May 2023,’ Amnesty International said “but the mounting death toll — so far — tells a different story.

The human rights organisation further said “Plateau: 23–25 December 194 killed, Kaduna: 3 December 142 killed, Sokoto: 24 December 12 killed, Katsina: 24 December 8 killed, Borno: 1 January 12 killed at Chibok.”

Being the most recent among attacks, Plateau Christmas Eve killings has been on the front burner of national discussion as Nigerians and the international community continue to condemn it while calling for its perpetrators to be brought to book.

Mr Tinubu has also condemned the attacks, ordering provision of relief materials for the families of victims of Plateau Christmas Eve killings.

The United Nations, France and the United States of America have respectively condemned Plateau killings, charging Mr Tinubu to ensure perpetrators were arrested and prosecuted.
