State media stated on Wednesday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un claimed his nation had created its first-ever military spy satellite and planned to launch it at an undisclosed time.

During his visit to the nation’s aerospace department on Tuesday, Mr Kim stated that possessing a functioning military surveillance satellite is essential for North Korea to use its nuclear-capable missiles successfully.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency, Kim noted major security concerns posed by “the most hostile rhetoric and explicit action” by the U.S. and South Korea this year.

Mr Kim revealed that “the military reconnaissance satellite No. 1” had already been developed and directed officials to expedite preparations for its launch.

According to KCNA, he stated that North Korea needs to launch multiple satellites to create an intelligence-gathering capability.

North Korea has proven it can launch satellites into orbit through missile and rocket tests.
