How police area commander, DPO killed Jimoh Isiaq: Family
A lawyer representing the family of Jimoh Isiaq has written to the Inspector-General Muhammed Adamu with demands for immediate prosecution of the officers involved in Saturday’s shooting of protesters in Ogbomoso.
Mr. Isiaq, 20, was fatally hit by police bullets after he went near the #EndSARS protests that were held in Ogbomoso over the weekend. The police denied firing live rounds, despite evidence that exposed their excessive brutality against marchers.
Hussein Afolabi, an Ibadan-based lawyer, promptly wrote to Mr. Muhammed on Monday morning, accusing the divisional police officer of Owode, Ogbomoso, of being involved in Mr. Isiaq’s murder.
Mr. Afolabi, in the petition seen by Peoples Gazette Monday afternoon, also said the area commander of Ogbomoso gave a prior order for officers to open fire on protesters.
ACP Oyeniyi Yemi is the area commander of Ogbomosho, while SP Babalola Sarafa is the DPO.
The petition, which threatened to invoke criminal justice statutes should Mr. Adamu fail to act, appeared to be the first formal claims that two police chiefs in charge of the area were involved in the murder. Mr. Afolabi said he has the permission of Atanda and Ramota Jimoh, the deceased’s parents, to file the complaints.
Mr. Isiaq was buried on Saturday evening amidst tears, hours after he was killed. Nigerians have already been demanding urgent justice for his killing and a group under the #EndSARS movement is raising funds to support legal actions.
