Two soldiers killed as troops repel terrorists’ attack in Borno
At least two soldiers and an unspecified number of terrorists were killed as troops of “Operation Hadin Kai” blocked the jihadist fighters’ crossing point in Borno, Peoples Gazette has learnt.
The incident occured Tuesday at Kwamdi village in Damboa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
The troops engaged in a fierce gun battle with members of the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) that led to the death of an unconfirmed number of the terrorists.
Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesman, confirmed the incident to The Gazette Wednesday night.
Daily Trust, Wednesday reported that the ISWAP terrorists attacked a military formation in 10 utility vehicles.
The report disclosed that the insurgents blazed some military equipments after a gun duel with the troops.
It was gathered that the terrorists burnt down one Armour Personnel Carrier (APC) and a gun truck as they carted away with an unspecified number of weapons.
Mr Nwachukwu, however, refuted the report when contacted by The Gazette Wednesday evening, adding that the troops prevented terrorists from crossing their supply route.
“I can confirm that troops of Operation Hadin Kai deployed in a forward operational base to block terrorists crossing point at Kwamdi on Tuesday prevented ISWAP terrorists from using the crossing point, as their supply route in an encounter that dealt severe casualty on the terrorists who attempted to force their way through the crossing point.
“The troops successfully repelled the marauding terrorists, killing some of them and defended the crossing point. Sadly, two personnel paid the supreme price in the encounter,” Mr Nwachukwu said.
ISWAP terror group is a faction of Boko Haram group that emerged in 2016. The group who specialises in attacking military bases and formations pledged its allegiance to Islamic State.
The deadly group in a viral video June 7 claimed to have killed Abubakar Shekau, leader of Boko Haram group.
ISWAP fighters have launched numerous attack on frontline security operatives that has led the the deaths of many.
