President Joe Biden conferred the presidential medal of freedom on 18 individuals across several human endeavours for their contributions to society.

The ceremony held on Saturday celebrated a mix of political, cultural, and philanthropic figures, many of whom represent the old guard of American leadership and influence.

The former first lady, senator, and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, was among the recipients, receiving a standing ovation at the White House.

The late Robert F. Kennedy, whose son, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has publicly aligned himself with president-elect Donald Trump, was posthumously recognised, with his daughter, Kerry Kennedy, accepting the honour on his behalf.

Similarly, the late father of former Senator Mitt Romney, George Romney, was also honoured.

The younger Mr Romney, a regular critic of Mr Trump, accepted the award on behalf of his father.

The event also recognised prominent Democratic fundraisers, including billionaire philanthropist George Soros and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Ms Wintour, a staunch supporter of Mr Biden, has been a significant force in political fundraising, hosting events in Europe for his re-election campaign.

Cultural and entertainment icons were equally celebrated. U2’s lead singer Bono, actor Michael J. Fox, and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson were among the honourees.

Investor David Rubenstein was recognised for his philanthropic efforts.

However, one notable absence was Lionel Messi.

The global soccer star, initially selected to receive the honour, did not attend the event due to scheduling conflicts, according to the White House.

“As cultural icons, dignified statesmen, humanitarians, rock stars, sports stars, you feed the hungry, you give hope to those that are hurting, and you craft the signs and sounds of our movements and our memories,” Mr Biden said during the ceremony.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour, has often reflected the ideological leanings of those in office.Historians regard it as a symbolic gesture, highlighting the values and individuals each administration seeks to elevate and emulate.
