India’s youth-led Cockroach movement vows to continue protest after police crackdown
The youth-led Cockroach movement in India says it will continue its protest in New Delhi, a day after police used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters attempting to march towards Parliament.
Several protesters remained camped at Jantar Mantar amid a heavy police presence on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged failures in the country’s examination system.
“We are going to continue our protest,” founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, Abhijeet Dipke, said.
The protesters demanded accountability over police brutality against young students during Monday’s clashes.
The movement, which began as a satirical protest, has evolved into a nationwide, youth-led campaign focused on alleged examination irregularities, unemployment and government accountability.
The Delhi Police said about 180 people were injured during the clashes, including 118 security agents and 60 protesters.
