South Korea’s Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, on Wednesday, raided Starbucks company headquarters, following public complaints over the company’s marketing campaign, alleged to be an insult against victims of the country’s 1980 Gwangju pro-democracy uprising.

Reports said the police agency visited the facility to investigate whether the company’s officials deliberately initiated the controversial advertising strategy to purposely insult democracy movement members or not.

“The Seoul police raided the headquarters of Starbucks Korea this morning as part of the ongoing investigation,” an unidentified spokesperson for the company said.

The company, licensed by Korean conglomerate Shinsegae Group, became a subject of concern following its launch of ‘Tank Day’ marketing campaign in May to promote its collection of cups called ‘Tank tumblers.’

The advert strategy coincided with the country’s Democratisation Movement Day, observed to remember victims and participants of the 1980 protests against the military government of Chun Doo-hwan.

The 1980 uprising, whose immediate trigger was the expansion of martial law in the country, reportedly resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people in the city of Gwangju.

The police investigation followed public backlash, boycott, a formal apology by the company, sack of the CEO of Starbucks Korea Son Jung-hyun and a promise of an internal investigation by Starbucks Global.

Earlier in June, the company reportedly shut its operation to train its staff on historical awareness and the need to be socially sensitive.
