Old man in Squid Game wins South Korea’s first Golden Globe
South Korean actor O Yeong-su, popularly known for his ‘player 001’ role in the groundbreaking Netflix movie Squid Game, wins the first-ever Golden Globe award from South Korea.
On January 10, the 77-year-old actor was awarded the best supporting actor for his role ‘Oh II-nam’ in Netflix viral hit movie Squid Game.
This makes the ‘Old Man’ character the first-ever South Korean to ever win the prestigious Golden Globe award, beating other competitors, including American actors Billy Crudup and Kieran Culkin.
Mr O played a harmless aged “round character” in the thriller series about a number of financially desperate players of a very deadly game, playing for a tempting prize with their lives on the line.
“After hearing the news, I told myself for the first time, ‘you’re a nice dude’,” said the actor, according to a statement by Netflix. “It’s no longer us within the world, it’s the world within us. Embracing the scent of our culture and the love for my family, Thank all of you in the world. I wish you a beautiful life.”
After its release on September 17, 2021, Squid Game was recorded as Netflix’s biggest original series ever launched.
