Social media platform Twitter has confirmed that it is working on an edit button so users may alter tweets after they have been posted.

Following the news of Tesla CEO Elon Musk joining the board of directors for the app, the company confirmed the news about the edit feature.

“Now that everyone is asking… yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year,” Twitter said on Tuesday

In a Twitter thread, Jay Sullivan, the company’s vice president for consumer product, said the edit feature had been “the most requested Twitter feature for many years.”

“Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation,” Mr Sullivan said. “Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.”

The shift in company values followed the appointment of Parag Agrawal as Twitter CEO. Founder Jack Dorsey had been reluctant to add the feature in the past.

In 2018, Mr Dorsey shared his concern that an edit feature could let users tamper with a tweet’s meaning after it gets retweeted.

Twitter already launched an undo feature, though it’s only available for Twitter Blue subscribers.

On Monday, Peoples Gazette reported that Elon Musk bought a 9.2 per cent passive stake in the company.

Mr Musk tweeted at his 80 million followers, asking whether Twitter should add an edit button, with 73.4 per cent being in favour.
