The Anambra chapter of the Kwakwansiya Movement has announced the defection of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Pius Ndubueze Ukachukwu, chairman of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Anambra State, announced the development in a statement dated May 1, 2026.

“We formally announce the defection of our leader, Senator Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso PhD, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC),” the statement read, adding: “This decision is in the best interest of Nigeria, and aligns with our goal to meet the aspirations of all citizens. We remain committed to delivering good governance and progress for our dear nation.”

Mr Ukachukwu further directed all Kwakwansiya Movement members to join the NDC.

Peoples Gazette learnt on Saturday that Mr Kwankwaso’s move to the NDC was predicated upon an agreement with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, for both men to join the party and run on a joint presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections.

Messrs Kwankwaso and Obi had earlier joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
