Army chief Shaibu visits Rwanda’s genocide memorial, urges national unity

Army chief Waidi Shaibu has called for national unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence after visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda.
Appolonia Anele, the army spokeswoman, said in a statement on Monday that Mr Shaibu made the call during his ongoing official working visit to Rwanda.
Ms Anele said the visit highlighted the devastating consequences of ethnic hatred, religious intolerance, divisive rhetoric and violent extremism.
According to her, the memorial houses the remains of approximately 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and the tragedy offered important lessons for Nigeria on the need to rise above ethnic, religious and political differences and reject hate speech.
She added that the visit underscored the importance of responsible leadership, early conflict prevention and sustained civil-military cooperation.
According to her, national unity remains fundamental to lasting peace, security and development.
