FRSC acting corps marshal, Dauda Biu, says bad roads hamper safe transportation in Nigeria.

Mr Biu said this when he received the Nigerian Building And Road Research Institute (NBRRI) officials, who paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said FRSC would continue working with relevant agencies to complement the government’s huge road infrastructure investment.

Mr Biu called for collaboration among relevant government agencies to address the problem by implementing audit reports on roads in the country.

According to him, apart from the poor condition of the roads, the absence of relevant elements such as signage, hard shoulders and markings also contributes to road traffic crashes.

Mr Biu emphasised that data collection, analysis and information gathering were paramount in road safety management.

“FRSC had established a safety engineering department to coordinate the engineering aspect of roads in Nigeria. They are to also carry out an investigation on any fatal road crash which accounts for more than four deaths,” he said.

Mr Biu disclosed that the FRSC had collaborated with NBRRI to conduct studies on traffic crashes in Lagos State, including investigating pavement failures on three major highways.

He listed the highways to include Enugu-Port Harcourt, Abuja-Lokoja and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, emphasising the deep hole on the Rigachikun bridge in Kaduna.

The corps marshal also mentioned that the FRSC needed more collaboration to investigate pavement failures on all the critical highways in the country.

According to the NBRRI director-general Samson Duna, the institute is researching various aspects of road safety.

He said the aim was to ascertain the causes of road and bridge collapse and other problems to address them and make Nigerian roads safer.
